As a designer my passion lies in trying and testing new solutions for simple everyday needs where function and beauty are of paramount importance. I am particularly fascinated by reduced forms, as they appear straightforward on the surface, but in fact expose all elements to close scrutiny and are therefore very demanding on the designer. From the small northern Finnish town of Tornio, I feel the influence of my background can be clearly traced in the character of my work.

ROYAL-SERVING DISH

Pillows are used in many different ways. In hotels you can usually find a welcoming candy on your pillow. This idea guided me in designing my ceramic serving dish, Royal. In my opinion pillows are connected to luxury; when someone is serving you something on a pillow it must be a special treat.

EYE-BRACELET AND LASHES-RINGS

Sight is the most important of our senses.
Beauty is the function of a jewel.
Where is the beauty?
It is in your eye.

Eyes and eyelashes are everybody’s natural jewellery. The eyelashes are the only hair of a human body which are directly connected to beauty. You never hear of ugly eyelashes but a complete lack of lashes is considered a negative thing. People criticize each other’s hair every day as well as a number of people find meeting eyebrows unattractive.
Materials: plastic, animal hair

FROZEN

Frozen is a serving dish or centrepiece in white porcelain.

Winter in Finland: Pure white snowbound woods and fields. Oftentimes, when the winter is particularly hard, the freezing wind will carve, etch and drift the surface of the fallen snow into beautiful free forms: These are the origins of Frozen.

Sola - Trivet

SOLA - TRIVET

Inspired by the melodic water- droplets as winter ice melts from the birch branches back into the quiet Nordic lakes.

The small inner trivet can be used to support a tea or coffee pot; the outer piece for pans and serving dishes. Joining two outer sections together will form the letter ‘S’ – for ‘SOLA’ - and provide a base for a large oven or serving dish.

The materials used are white stoneware with a choice of plywood or warm oak.

Sola - Tea Light Holder

SOLA - TEA LIGHT HOLDER

This piece encapsulates the whole idea behind SOLA; the word in Finnish meaning ’valley’, ’gorge’ or ’pass’; in essence ’the space between’ and relating to a moving mechanical part. In a clever twist the red heat motif appears on the inside; the vertical cut or ‘sola’ revealing the inner workings of the form and allowing the tea light to be replaced easily.

Sola - Coffee Set

SOLA - COFFEE SET

Inspired by the mesh and movement of machine parts, the forms of SOLA are at once clean, funky and architectonic. Equally at home in the living-space, bar or restaurant

COFFEE CUP

The cup incorporates a thicker, heat-resistant band replacing the common handle to create a stacking device, ironically coloured with a bright red enamel. While off duty the stack makes an eye-catching totemic feature in the kitchen.

SAUCER - PLATE

This clever, dual purpose piece offers on the one side a saucer for the cup with space for biscuits and on the other a functional sandwich or pastry plate.

HOLLOW
